Oakland Community Mural ‘Solidarity Is Power’ Celebrates Unity

Oakland has always been a living embodiment of the magic that happens when different cultures don’t just coexist but genuinely protect and celebrate each other. We’re celebrating one year since the unveiling of ‘Solidarity Is Power,’ a mural highlighting the power of racial solidarity! The piece was created by Oakland artist and Urban Peace Movement (UPM) alumni Timothy B., carrying the vision of UPM and Youth Together youth leaders. Its home is in North Oakland at Oakland International High School, a school that celebrates the diversity of its student body. In May 2025, community came together to dedicate the mural with libations by Baba Greg Hodge, African drumming by Bantaba, and blessings from Teokalli, a traditional Aztec-Mexica dance group. At a time when immigrant and Black and Brown communities are being targeted and history is being erased, our culture, our art, our stories are an act of resistance.  This mural — powered by a #StopTheHate grant, organized by Youth Together and Urban Peace Movement, with our youth leaders, and created by @timothyb_art — is a tribute to Oakland’s deep tradition of solidarity and a reminder of what’s possible when we come together. We have found there is a disconnect between post length and time to product and revenue generated. With this approach, the problem is far less, though by no means solved.
